CIRQUE DU FREAK
BOOK #1 A LIVING NIGHTMARE.
CRITICAL THINKING QUESTION:
Who has “power” in your text? How does that power get shown?

The Main character Darren Shan, is very interested in spiders. He has a best friend Steve is interested in horror films and comics. They both love scary things and get along great. These children both really wanted to go to the horror show called "Cirque du Freak, but they knew their parents wouldn't let them. In order for them to go they  had to sneak out so, Darren made an excuse to his mom that he is staying at Steve's house and Steve said he was going to Darren's house. Luckily the lie went perfectly. They really enjoyed the show but, Darren was the most fascinated in the spider "Madam Octa." Darren wanted that spider so badly that he stole it and took it back home. Upon arrival, he ran up to his room and put the spider in his hands. The Spider bit him and left a poison in his body. Darren would not survive after that infection. "Mr Crepsley" (The owner of the Spider) came to retrieve it, but then realized that he was bitten. He told Darren that the only way he would be saved, is by being bitten by him. That is when Darren found that he was a vampire. He accepted the terms, and agreed that from that day on he would be his assistant and help him through out the way. He gained, power, speed and agility. From that day on he was a half vampire on his way to achieve full Vamp.

A LONG WAY GONE By Ishmael Beah
What really hard things are happening in this text? Are these things happening in the world now? Where?

In this book, it shows how the before the main character, Ishmael Beah became a child soldier, he was living a happy life with his family in Sierra Leone. All was going great until the civil war breaks out and the rebel soldiers come to attack his town. Everyone scatters around to escape. Some people survive the attack, but his family was sadly murdered in the encounter. It seems like his child hood is destroyed, but he tries to gain it back by learning the power of love.

War is like hell itself. Instead of burning flames, its a battlefield of death and despair. You forget who you are. You forget the meaning of life, love, laughter. These are all just words to them. Child soldiers are forced to fight. They can't choose to leave. They stay until death. This is happening all over the world. At  least 25 countries have this problem. The world is corrupted with their mentality. It is just wrong and should be stopped.

Child Soldier Essay(DRAFT)

In the present day, at least 25 countries or more use children as their pawns. These kids are turned into fighting machines at a very young age. Child Soldiers don’t deserve the treatment they get. Children are supposed to love not kill.

Leaders of war only use child soldiers for personal gain. “Children are often considered the perfect weapon.” These leaders do not consider these children to be helpless or misfortunate. They don’t care about these kids well being. All they care about is keeping extra cash in their pockets. “The children don’t get paid.”

Child soldiers get robbed of their childhood. “The rebels came and attacked us. They killed my mother and father in front of my eyes. I was 10 years old. They took me with them.” At a very young age the life of these children are changed drastically. Both Parents are killed while the child watches and horror. Then he/ she are forced into fighting in the war with that very memory scarred in their brain. The damage that can do to a person is incredible. “Killing became a normality for them”

Even after they are grown up they can’t adjust to a normal life. “They suffered long term trauma.” These kids have been put through much suffering, they have seen the deaths of many people, and have also killed people themselves. Their psychological state is probably damaged considering the pain they must have caused and went

Child soldiers are forced to fight. There is nothing they can do. “The first time I killed someone, I got so sick, I thought I was going to die. But I got better.” These children don’t wanna fight. They want to live a normal life, but the warlords don’t care. All they care for is money and power. The kids have no say in anything. The life of child soldiers is not easy at all.

Child Soldier Essay

In the present day, at least 25 countries or more use children as their pawns. These kids are turned into fighting machines at a very young age. Child Soldiers don’t deserve the treatment they get. Children are supposed to love not kill.
“Only the dead have seen the end of war.”-Plato

Leaders of war only use child soldiers for personal gain. “Children are often considered the perfect weapon.” These leaders do not consider these children to be helpless or misfortunate. They don’t care about these kids well being. All they care about is keeping extra cash in their pockets. “The children don’t get paid.” Child soldiers work very hard and aren’t rewarded for their effort. These children are put through much effort, and have nothing to look forward to.

“Killing became a normality for them”
Eventually these children are psychologically trained to kill people. They must kill, or be killed.  These kids are drugged so that they won’t feel pain in battle.

Even after they are grown up they can’t adjust to a normal life. “They suffered long term trauma.” These kids have been put through much suffering, they have seen the deaths of many people, and have also killed people themselves. Their psychological state is probably damaged considering the pain they must have caused and went through. “They get trapped in the circle of war no matter where they go.” The children could try to escape, but they would get killed. No matter what they did, there would be no escape. It was like a jail, and the cell was closed shut.

These children are treated unjustly and unfairly. These kids shouldn't be put through all of this trouble. They deserve the chance to be a child and not a slave of war. Kids these days, don’t realize how much easier their lives are than the kids out in war.

POEM ON GLOBAL WARMING

The Dangers of Global Warming

Global Warming.
Temperature rising.
Glaciers melting.
The world hanging.
Will we all survive?
Who knows...
The sun getting bigger.
Our hope becoming smaller.
Will the day come... When we are all killed?
One day, the night of christmas will be warm.
And our summers will be cold.
Hurricanes.
Blizzards.
Death and Despair.
Why does no one care?
We need someone to save us.
Make that someone you.
For our destiny awaits us.
Lets live in a world of peace.
We can only change it with the help of the people.
We are the people!

We should all make a change.
The way we think, should be re arranged.
The world is a fun and carefree place.
Until Global warming comes in your face.
SO LETS FIGHT IT, UNITE AS ONE.
To stop global warming for everyone.
Save the Planet piece by piece.
Thats the end of this poem, goodbye and peace.

How I came To create this poem...
The creation of this poem came easy to me. I used a bit of my knowledge on global warming and made a poem on how people have to realize how serious the topic of global warming actually is. Our world as we know it can change drastically. I felt this poem could help other children and people understand how the world can turn out to be.

As I wrote my poem, I let my fingers flow on the keys of my laptop and wrote what I felt. I wrote the truth. People take their lives for granted and things can happen in a flash. It took me a couple days to complete this, but i feel my completed piece can help people know more about global warming and make them want to learn more about it.

5.)War
6.)Corruption of Government
7.)Carbon Pollution
8.)Lack of Jobs

When I was younger child, the cost of things were much cheaper. For example, If I ever wanted a snickers, I’d pay. 50-65 Cents. Now stores charge $1.00 or maybe $1.25. Prices are just too high. I realize times are tough, but paying some much for a smidget piece of chocolate is just too much. I wish prices would just go down a bit. Even though the economy is still in a deficit, little snacks like that shouldn’t cost that much money. I know the prices won’t change, but I feel that they should at least attempt to bring prices down. Candy shouldn’t be that expensive.

Social Awareness Project- 3
Littering...
Why do people litter? Why not go to the nearest garbage can and throw out your trash? These questions have been asked countless times because our country litters. The simplicity of picking up and throwing out your trash is easy and requires little to no effort.

Step One.
Take garbage
Step Two.
Find Garbage Can
Step Three.
Throw out the trash.

Then you’re done. It isn’t too hard. I really don’t know why people can’t follow these simple instructions. Is our country just lazy? Or is it that we just don’t care. It’s probably both. Well we need to change that. The world is being filled with countless amounts of garbage. Eventually the world will become a giant land mass of garbage if we don’t try to fix this problem. People may ask, how can we help? Pick up garbage that you may see on the floor or around you, or pick up after yourself. It isn’t hard. You may not care, but you are harming our environment and the world itself. We have to step up to the plate and try our hardest to help the world out because if we don’t our world as we know it, may change in a negative way and you will be in for a “Rude Awakening.”

“Litter cleanup costs the U.S. almost $11.5 billion each year, with businesses paying $9.1 billion.  Governments, schools, and other organizations pick up the remainder.”-Kab.org

12,000,000 miles are driven each year picking up litter in our state. Think about all the gas that is needed to fuel trucks for litter pick up."- Stoplitter.org

"18% of all littered items end up in our streams and waterways as pollution. That means litter in our state travels to other states and eventually ends up in the ocean."

Diary of A Wimpy Kid
In the book "Diary of a wimpy Kid" by Jeff Kinney. The main character, Greg, is a self centered, egotistical, kid. He thinks he knows everything and is cooler than everyone when in reality he isn't. He hates singing and embarrassing moments. And to his disadvantage he has a younger brother that LOVES to embarrass him. Greg also uses his best friend Rowley and isn't a very good partner.

In the book Greg basically made Rowley do whatever he wanted. One thing he did was break Rowley's arm. He didn't apologize. He thought of it as a joke. Everyone at school sympathized Rowley and Greg tried to still the fame.

Another example is when Greg framed Rowley for leaving the first graders inside a ditch. Even though it was Gregs fault, he blamed Rowley for it. Greg is bad friend and doesnt deserve someone like Rowley.

                  DEMON APOCALYPSE
In the Book "Demon Apocalypse" by Darren Shan, The main character Grubs Grady had many challenges and obstacles he had to overcome. From learning how to fly, to learning advanced magic, to traveling through TIME and SPACE! Darren's adventure was full of grief and relief, but he learns many things in his pathway. He lost things and also gained things. Overall the gruesome, but amazing book is a roller coaster of twists and turns that kept the reader craving for more!

In the beginning of the book Darren was tricked by his beloved mother figure "Juni." They mounted a plane and Darren, thinking nothing could go wrong, was never more wrong in his life. The plane was full of demons , including the demon master "Lord Loss!" Darren trying to fight them, but he didn't have the strength. The Demons overcame him easily. As Darren begins to lose all hope. An old man springs to his feet, breaks a hole in the plane and pushes Darren out, the old man also jumps out. In mid flight the old man tells Darren to picture himself flying and he will land safely. The old man immediately starts to fly and leaves Darren behind.
Darren concentrates and began to fly as well. (Lets just say the landing wasn't as easy)

The old mans name was "Beranabus" He is a very powerful Mage. And so is his partner "Kernel Fleck" These two adults teach Grubs how to overcome demon power and face any obstacle. Sadly their power wasn't strong enough to face any of the demons and they lost in battle losing all their friends and family. Luckily the spirit of the dead mage, "Bec" used her spirit to bring all these mages back in time.

In this period the mages had the opportunity  to plan out what they would do during battle and the plan was full proof. They slayed all the demons, but at one cost. They had to sacrifice Grub's half brother Bill-E in the process. Grubs was hurt badly, but the dead spirit of bec resurrected into the body of Bill-E and destroyed the remaining threats. The battle was won, but nothing was gained. Just pain and misery.

STEVE JOBS THE MAN WHO THOUGHT
                            DIFFERENT (Revised)
In the Book "Steve Jobs the man who thought different", a biography by Karen Blumenthal, it explains what Steve Paul Jobs went through and achieved in his life. In the book it explains how His adoption parent’s names were Clara and Paul Jobs. Steve Jobs was originally named Steven Jobs. Steve Jobs was adopted. Unlike most people; Jobs didn’t feel bad about being adopted.  "Knowing I was adopted made me feel more independent" Steve Jobs said to his biographer. He had no problem knowing he was adopted and said he never felt abandoned; it made him feel "special". Clara worked as an accountant and Paul was a coast guard Veteran. They lived in a mountain view within California in Silicon Valley.

Jobs and his father would work on electronics in the garage. As time went by Jobs grew a passion for electronics and wanted to make his own. This eventually led into meeting his partner Steve Wozniak. Wozniak was a computer genius and got Jobs to the glory he ended up having. Steve Wozniak was a brilliant computer engineer. He and Steve both had a passion for electronics, such as computers. After High School, Jobs attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Eventually Steve Jobs ended up dropping out of the college six months after joining. In 1972 the game pong came out on the Atari system. Steve loved that game. In 1974 he decided to join the company. Several months later he left Atari to find spiritual enlightenment in India. After he found enlightenment, in 1976 Wozniak and himself decided to start their own business, which is now known as apple. They Started in the Garage of Steve Jobs. After much hard work and dedication they finally conducted their first working machine, known as the Macintosh.

Jobs and Woz made a series of computers that they believed were going to be marketed for six hundred sixty six dollars and sixty six cents. Their first computer the Apple 1 (Mac I) was a partial success, but the Apple 2 sales skyrocketed and was a complete success, sales increased by 700 percent. The Company made 774,000 dollars for apple 1 and and 139 million for the apple.

In 1980 apple computers became a huge trademark, with a value of 1.2 Billion dollars. Jobs needed a president for Apple so he decided to meet with John Scully, a marketing expert at Pepsi-cola. Jobs decided to give Scully the job of being president at apple because of his marketing expertise.

The next products made by apple in the next couple years had many design flaws. Customers had returned the product back because of the quality and errors found in the machine. Apples main rival was PC. The owner and creator of PC, Bill Gates, was a close friend, but also the worst enemy of Steve Jobs. PC was a more successful business and had much more sale production but apple was special. It was different from all other companies.

Steve was eventually kicked out of apple for unfriendly conduct. Steve Jobs felt hurt being kicked out of his own company, but he didn't want his career to end there. To him money was no object; he only loved creating his own inventions. This eventually led into making the company NeXT. Steve wanted a life purpose so he tried to create another computer. The computers weren't making as much money as the Macs, but that all changed when Pixar joined their forces. Pixar used Steve's "NeXT" creation to make all the Pixar films we know and love, such as the Incredibles, Finding Nemo, and Toy Story. Another person he partnered with was George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. While Jobs business is a huge a success Mac's profits are dropping to the ground. Apple decides to hire Jobs back, so Steve decides to sell NeXT to Pixar.

Steve Jobs ended up creating many famous products that are used in our everyday lives such as the iPhone, iPod, iPad, and Mac books. Steve Jobs was a legend. Steve Jobs was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer; he fought the battle for a long time until his body couldn't handle the struggle anymore. The battle was fought for about five years. Steve Jobs life was very successful. His life had its ups and downs, but he died as a happy man.

Tuesdays With Morrie - Blog

In the book Tuesdays With Morrie, by Mitch Albom. One of the secondary characters Morrie Schwarts changed many peoples lives with his acts of kindness and his great understanding. Everyone loved Morrie. Especially his Favorite Student Mitch. (Mitch Albom) Morrie loved all of his students, but him and his student Mitch had a very special bond.

Morrie taught college classes but he wasn't an ordinary teacher. He never failed any of his students. He enjoyed giving good grades. At Graduation time Morrie was sad to see all of his students leave, but also glad that they were going to continue with their lives. Morrie cried when Mitch was leaving and told Mitch to visit whenever he could. Mitch never did call. He never visited. Years after Mitch started watching the news and saw that his old professor Morrie was the headline. Morrie was sick.

When Mitch Found that Morrie was sick, he went to visit his old teacher. Morrie was thrilled to see his favorite student coming to visit. He had so much joy that he broke into tears. Over the time period that Mitch stood with Morrie their relatonship grew stronger. Mitch learned to love with his heart. He learned life lessons. This wouldn't have been possible without his wise Mentor Morrie Schwarts. Mitch spent most of his time with Morrie. Sadly the time wasn't too long before Morrie died. Everyone missed him, but no one ever forgot him.

Morrie Schwarts was a huge impact on the lives of others, His acts of kindness and understanding changed people (Mitch) and showed them that their lives shouldn't be dedicated to only work. Love is the key to success.

       THE DRUMMER BOY OF SHILOH
               READERS RESPONSE!

"You Boy, you are the heart of the army. Think about that." In the book The Drummer Boy Of Shiloh  by Ray Bradbury, one of the secondary characters (The General) helps Joby realize that his job has importance. The General is a father figure to Joby. He boosts his self esteem and makes him feel part of the army. The General is a very important figure to the book. He is the reason Joby felt proud in doing his job. I feel that General changed what the story line would have been with only phrase, "You Boy, you are the heart of the army. Think about that."

In the beginning of the story, Joby was very lonely character, he had no one to talk to, and felt that his job was of no importance. Little did Joby no that his job was the most important in the army. The General started to make Joby feel better by saying "You wanna cry some more? Go on ahead, I did the same last night." I feel this line is important because it helps Joby realize that he's not alone. Other people are scared of what might and can happen, just like Joby and they feel the same. I felt that this line helped bring a type of comfort to Joby.

Later in the Story the General told Joby. " I was the Drummer boy at the battle of Owl Creek or the Tennessee river, or maybe they'll just name it after the church there. I was the Drummer boy of Shiloh. Good Grief that has a good beat and sound to it." I think this line boosts Joby's self esteem because it proves to him that if the general started off as a drummer boy and became General, he could do the same. The General treats Joby as his own son, he comforts him and makes him feel like he was his own. The General is a huge father figure.

"You Boy, you are the heart of the army. Think about that."  In conclusion the General helps Joby realize that his job has importance and boosts his self esteem and gives him courage throughout the passage.

                        THE MILLION DOLLAR THROW

The goal is that Nate has to make the foot ball go through a ten inch hole from 20 yards away. The task is very difficult and he has his doubts but he somewhat belives he can make it.

Nate's bestfriend Abby is always inspiring Nate to do better. Abby is a very inspiring person. She makes Nate try his hardest and helps him strive to do better. Abby tries to practice with Nate, but he doesn't play his best with her because she is a girl. Abby is like a mother figure to Nate. She does everything in her power to help him do his best. She is a very good friend and partner to Nate. If it weren't for her Nate wouldn't have made it as far as he did. Nate loves Abby. The reason Nate trys so hard is because of her.

One of My favorite reading responses was by Taiseer Uddin. I liked his reading response because it contained good textual evidence. For example Taiseer explains what the main character Hannah went through in her life that made her want to commit suicide. He gives some examples on the reason why and concluded the last reason clearly and thoroughly. Overall I loved Taiseer's readers response!!!

Another Readers response I liked was Christopher Pham's. Chris and I did the same book and had some similarities and differences. His piece contained much detail, and you can tell it took much dedication and hard work to make the piece. He explained Steve's Jobs life style pretty accurately and put many bonus facts. His piece made me want to continue reading and helped my see some of the things i could have added. It was a great piece as well.
